What happens is you stand by them, and it hurts. It can't help but hurt if it's someone you love, but you need to be there for them, so you are. *hug*
They KNOW that you're there and they know how you feel and they know that you would take the pain away if you could. That's the important part. Just that you're there. Believe me when I say that it makes all the difference in the world to know that you aren't alone when hard times hit. Hugs don't always require arms. Honest.
Oh, that's the most frustrating feeling, knowing that you can't help someone you care about. I've been there before. Be well!
